The chain is detachable and extremely light weight, my guess is that it is a low quality metal, but i prefer it the way it is because it seems like it will not cause damage to the bag. the little crosses that follow the edge of the bag seem really study and symmetrical in position and direction to both sides. i noticed that the stock photos shows that the zipper charm is a skull and cross bones, but mine was a cross (which i really like, but i noticed it was different). i have always wanted a coffin purse, so for me this was a huge win.
